RIVER’S EDGE
RIVER’S EDGE
The first river otter I saw “in the flesh” was on the Salmon River, probably in 1971, my first full summer as a river guide. Along a rocky shore strewn with the deadfall and flotsam of trees was a vertical “post” of sorts. Then the post moved.... Otter! The otter slipped gracefully into the river and was gone, only to emerge yards away on the river’s edge, to observe our passing. “River’s Edge” is a commemoration of that first sighting, upright and alert: fleeting, but significant.
