The Boundary Waters, 1961: my first encounter with loons. On some lakes literally thousands rested, fed, and piggy-backed their young. Evenings were often filled with a cacophony of their wild cries – sounds that we “two-legs” regularly associate with wilderness. The sculpture, “Up North”, found its origins in this experience, but came forth shortly after I began an association with a Minnesota gallery of the same name. It seemed appropriate. The gallery is close to the home the friend with whom I shared my first loon. The carrying of the young is symbolic for me. It is through my travels and associa¬tions that I have been transported to some of my strongest visual experiences.
